Shotgun Justice

I’ve been battling to get words down for the last two nights. Not sure why. So I decided to make it my wife’s problem. I burst into the living room like a large bursty thing and forced her at spoon-point to give me a keyword and a genre.

Thunder and thriller.

She’s obsessed with the weather. Last time I asked I got torrential.

And so here’s my 325 word thunder-thriller entitled Shotgun Justice. Sounds like a really bad movie. Which makes me happy.

Summer rainstorms. Mother Nature’s gift to flora, fauna and the discerning hitman.

Joey hated the term hitman. Fucking detested it. Conjured up images of some thick-necked goon wearing a bad suit and toting a silenced Glock. Gave the whole profession a bad name. Joey had been at this long enough to know that suit wearers in his line of work had a limited shelf life. Sooner or later the fucker would catch in a fence or flop around like the skin on a caved in skull at just the wrong moment. And why would you bother with a Glock when you can saw down a shotgun?

“It’s not just about killing,” said Joey. The man propped up against the headboard of the bed pulled the sheet higher and stared. Joey caught the faint glint of hope in the man’s eyes and laughed. “Ha! Today is different, this one is all about killing. I was just making the point. You’ve got nothing I want. Nothing I need. You just need to die. I get paid and we all move on. I go forward and you drop down the shit slide to the good old realm of fire.”

“Please…I’ll do…”

“Anything?” Joey laughed again, hefting the shotgun to his shoulder. “Do you honestly think you’ve got something new to offer me?”

“I’ve got money. Whatever they’re paying you I’ll…”

“This has nothing to do with money. From what they showed me on that hard disk I’d shoot you for free you sick fuck. I’m…”

The bedroom sparkled in white light. Thunder hammered a second later and drifted off in a series of low rumbles.

Joey checked the chamber of the shotgun and snapped it shut. “Almost time Judge. Anything more you want to say?”

“Please…you don’t understand…I…I loved them…I loved them all…

Joey pulled the trigger and ended the lie.

When Mother Nature’s thundering camouflage followed soon after he pulled the trigger again just because he could.

  1. Just because he could – that is really chilling – excellent. You have yet again said an awful lot in not very many wordicles. It’s very good

Now just put that spoon down on the floor and back away. Keep your hands where I can see them and nobody’s gonna get hurt. This is just a trifle we can move on now and make sure everyone gets their just desserts.

    • I had a funny feeling you might like that line Diane! Excellent trifle/dessert puns – if I did a follow up to this story would it be classed as “afters”? Thanks for your constant support – really means a lot to me.

  2. Your opening sequence – set the tone…. I cracked up lauging and felt for your poor wife and applaud her for her response, which led to your inpiration. Nice gritty, raw and well paced piece. Better than a bad movie!

    • Thanks Mel! My wife suffers greatly for my art hehe 🙂 I’m slightly amazed that so many people have enjoyed this one as I was a bit unsure about it last night – like it a bit better reading it back this morning. My cousin sent me a message suggesting Jason Statham for the main role in the B-movie…she might be on to something… Thanks for reading and commenting – always great to get your thoughts.

    • Thanks for such a positive comment Shannon – really great to know you enjoyed it. If you like spoon-point there will probably be quite a bit for you to enjoy on this blog! Really appreciate you taking the time to read and comment, thank you 🙂

  3. Interesting story. I felt inspired by this. I will not do anything about it. I can’t do Thriller. But I imagine “they” put whatever is on the hard disk so he would kill him. Just before he dies he mentions something. Ah. The plot thickens…
Don’t listen to my BS. Nice story and I agree with Diane, you say a lot in few words.

    • I wasn’t sure I could do Thriller either Tobbe until it was forced upon me by an unscrupulous wife. I propose our next Thriller is to remake the Michael Jackson video with the rest of the LS editors – I’m sure you’re up for it 🙂 Thanks for officially thickening my plot and brightening my day!
