Words are not enough.
All this dreaming and for what?
An empty tired heart?
But your words sustain
My heart through darkest hours,
And quicken my skin.
Your skin would grace mine
If our wandering pathways
Could ever converge.
Would convergence kill
The spirit of what we share?
That I could not bear.
Should we not risk all?
Fracture caution to the wind
And lay our hearts bare?
I know your heart well.
The baring of other things…
Is not our fate, love.
You are right, and yet…
Should I not rail against it?
Acceptance is death.
Acceptance is life!
Do not underestimate
The strength of your heart.
Fine. If you refuse
To accept this is our fate.
One day we will be.
I long for that day.
And if our days are numbered?
Another life then.
Nice one, Nik. Also nice typography (is that the right English word?).

Thanks Tobbe – yes, it’s definitely the right word. I had a stray thought about two people communicating with letters and then thought why not short poems. The layout was based on modern day text messaging except for the last part where their thoughts converge. It was a lot of fun to write!

That’s a really cool idea. I might steal it with your permission.

I am so impressed that you were able to write this length of poem using haikus that all flowed so seamlessly and naturally, not only as separate stanzas, but as a cohesive whole. Great job 🙂

Thanks Shannon. I’ve never been much of a poet but I really enjoy playing around with the haiku format (shamelessly trampling all over the actual rules of course). I liked the idea of taking something that feels ancient and combining it with a modern day instant message format. Was a lot of fun to do and obviously all the more rewarding knowing that people like yourself enjoyed it! Thanks for stopping by and commenting 🙂

A great poem. I love this correspondence type of poetry. It makes the reader feel, and hear both sides. 😀

Thanks! I’m so glad you enjoyed it and appreciate you taking the time to comment. I’ve never attempted anything like this before and I’m a dabbler at best when it comes to poetry so it’s great to have some positive feedback from a poet 🙂 I’ve just been reading up on your explanation and examples of some different forms of poetry so maybe I will be inspired to branch out from the occasional haiku experiment!

Hi Nik, beautifully done. This is almost exactly the premise of that book I was talking about where the two characters never actually meet in the flesh, just exchange haiku by post. Looks like someone made a novel from this idea! Yours are brilliant.

Damn – I should have extended this piece two years ago!! Thanks for the lovely comment Becky – I really enjoyed writing this one, it’s a nice format to play around with. Certainly makes me want to read that book even more now!
